How Important Is A Cover Letter?

In short, it's extremely important. In details, a cover letter is the first thing your potential employer will look at. If it doesn't catch his or her attention, your whole job application is trashed, it's simple like that.

Needless to say, a cover letter doesn't just introduce the resume, but it actually tells the recruiter a lot about yourself, in as little as half a page of writing. Yes, it's a real challenge for anyone to write shorter but tell more. Thus you have to spend a lot of time developing your own version of cover letter.

Keep in mind that your cover letter will give the recruiter the very first impression about yourself, from your personality, characters, to your possible skills that they're looking for. As such, it is important that you convey your image on the cover letter via both ideas and style. Here are some examples:

1. If you want to tell the recruiter that you're decisive, straightforward, and having good communication skills, then your writing has to be short, concise but easy to understand. Use simple, common words instead of putting SAT-kind of vocabulary on your cover letter. Also, be specific of what you want. Never leave any ambiguous point and keep the recruiter guessing.

2. If you want to tell the recuiter that you're a competent professional, use standard English to write your cover letter and make sure that it is error-free. Any grammatical errors, even typos, will do serious damages to your chances.

3. Show that you care about your job and like the company by doing some research on the company in advance. If possible, address to a specific person by name in the cover letter. Don't make it sound like you don't even know what you're looking for.

4. Since you're marketing yourself, act like a professional marketer. Use buzz words that grab attention and convince the recruiter to take the next step, which is to look at your attached resume. If your cover letter doesn't get the recruiter's attention, you got no chance of getting the job.

5. Like a good salesman, be proactive but not pushy. Persuade the recruiter that you're the best for the job and that you won't disappoint him/her. Suggest that you will follow up some time later (like a week or two), and do follow up, but not to the point of harassing.
